Huawei’s recently launched Pura 80 series ships with the Kirin 9020. It’s the same chip that powered last year’s Mate 70 lineup. But the real buzz is around what’s coming next. The company’s next flagship SoC, reportedly called the Kirin 9030, is expected to debut with the Mate 80 series later this year.

According to a new leak (via Huawei Central), the Kirin 9030 is expected to offer a 20% performance boost over the Kirin 9020. That’s a notable jump, especially considering Huawei already claims the Kirin 9020 is 36% faster than the chips inside the Pura 70 series.

If true, this could mean a 50–60% improvement over the older Kirin 9000s 5G, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. These numbers are speculative at best, and the leak itself comes from a relatively unknown source. So, yes, you’ll want to take this with the usual pinch of salt.

What seems a bit more grounded is the chip’s launch timeline. A report from reliable leaker Digital Chat Station suggests Huawei is prepping one of four major flagship chips expected to arrive in late 2025, and the Kirin 9030 is likely that one.

5nm incoming?

Of course, we are not expecting Huawei’s next chip to go toe-to-toe with Snapdragon’s or Apple’s best, not yet, anyway. But what could be more interesting than raw performance is how the chip is made.

Several reports out of China claim Huawei’s Kirin X90 PC chip is already being manufactured on a 5nm process. If Huawei has indeed cracked in-house 5nm production, that would be a huge win for the company’s long-term chip ambitions.

Hardware aside, Huawei’s real ace right now is software optimization. And honestly, it’s doing a better job than most expected. Take the Huawei Mate X5, a foldable with three displays, powered by the Kirin 9010. That chip is driving an absurd number of pixels, and yet, the experience remains smooth.

So while Huawei’s silicon may still lag behind industry leaders in raw numbers, it’s clear the company is finding other ways to stay in the game.
