Metro 2039 Begins Its Fight Against Fascism This Winter

Publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games have officially revealed Metro 2039 as the fourth entry in their popular post-apocalyptic first-person shooter series, confirming that it is slated to release on both PC and consoles later this winter.

Metro 2039 sees us returning to Moscow’s underground, finding the several factions that used to vie for control united under one banner – that of the Novoreich, a fascist regime led by a fanatical Spartan named Hunter.

The Novoreich “rules through propaganda and fear, subjugating the population in the name of a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy,” according to the publisher.

This is the backdrop against which we take on the role of The Stranger, a reclusive figure haunted by waking nightmares – impressively depicted in Metro 2039 reveal trailer – who is “forced to undertake a harrowing journey back down to the Metro, a place he swore to never return.”

Metro 2039’s reveal also gave us a glimpse at some of its gameplay, confirming the return of makeshift weaponry, the terrifying mole-like Novalises as enemies, as well as a preference for using in-game objects to communicate important details as opposed to a traditional UI.

The fourth entry in the series also shares the penchant for impressive visuals, courtesy of the developer’s custom 4A Engine.

Although brief, this look suggests that Metro 2039 is firmly rooted in the series’ past, retaining the core elements that helped it become as popular as it is.

Developer 4A Games also explained that Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine has had an impact on Metro 2039’s final shape, with Executive Producer Jon Bloch telling Xbox Wire that “everything we had planned for the next chapter of Metro changed.”

Creative Director Andriy Shevchenko added that “war is our reality, and our message has shifted to be about the consequences, the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom.”

Author Dmitry Glukhovsky, whose work serves as the base for the previous games in the series, also returns for the fourth entry.

Metro 2039 is slated to release at some point during winter 2026 on PC, via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
