It’s safe to say it’s been a great 24 hours for Dune fans. Just yesterday, the title was officially confirmed as Dune: Part Three — a controversial decision ditching the Messiah name on which the film is based — and now the movie just got another exciting update. The official Dune Movie X account posted the first photo from the set of Dune: Part Three, taken by director Denis Villeneuve, and even confirmed that the film has officially begun production. All signs point to Dune: Part Three being released on December 18, 2026, but this is subject to a potential delay to 2027. Although the first set photo simply shows the beautiful dunes of Arrakis, it’s still undeniably exciting to know that work on the next Dune film has begun.

Dune: Part Three will see the return of several franchise veterans, with a few newcomers also joining the fold. The most obvious stars expected to reprise their roles are Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, who will play Paul Atreides and Chani for what may be the final time of their careers. Florence Pugh will also reprise her role as Princess Irulan in the film, and Dune: Part One star Jason Momoa has also confirmed his return as Duncan Idaho. It has even been reported that Robert Pattinson has joined the cast as the villainous Scytale, but this has not been officially confirmed. Ida Brooke and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa will play Ghanima and Leto II. The first two Dune movies adapted the first novel in Frank Herbert’s series, and Dune: Part Three will adapt the entirety of Dune: Messiah. Villeneuve will direct and write the script with Jon Spaihts.
