The Amir welcomed the Prime Minister of Pakistan and his delegation and expressed his deep appreciation for Pakistan’s role in de-escalating tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani leader reiterated Islamabad’s condemnation of attacks targeting Qatar and other regional countries by Iran.
Sharif arrived in Doha on Thursday as part of a three-nation visit aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and promoting peace in the region amid the U.S.-Israel war on Iran.
The Pakistani delegation was received by Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi, with the aircraft escorted by Qatari fighter jets.
“I thanked His Highness the Amir on behalf of the people of Pakistan for the exceptionally warm and generous gesture of sending Qatar’s fighter jets to escort our aircraft as it entered Qatari airspace,” Sharif said, adding that “I am truly touched by this gesture, which also embodies the spirit of Qatar’s renowned hospitality and the strength of our enduring ties”.
The meeting was also attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, Chief of the Amiri Diwan; and a number of senior officials.
On the Pakistani side, it was attended by Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Attaullah Tarar, Minister of Information; Amb. Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Minister of State, and other senior officials.
Diplomatic Gulf tour
The Pakistani prime minister’s visit to Doha marked the second leg of his April 15–18 tour, following a visit to Saudi Arabia the day earlier, as Islamabad steps up diplomatic efforts to facilitate mediation between the U.S. and Iran.
Just four days prior, marathon talks between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad ended without agreement, with reports suggesting that the next round of negotiations could be hosted in Pakistan.
Sharif’s regional visit also coincides with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran on Wednesday, where he called on the Iranian leadership, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Sharif is expected to travel to Türkiye next, where he will attend the Antalya Diplomatic Forum and meet leaders on the sidelines for bilateral meetings.
