What happens when Bollywood’s most trusted formula suddenly stops working? The year 2025 has reportedly delivered a harsh reality check to filmmakers who thought sequels were guaranteed money makers. From Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar 2 to Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5, multiple franchise films have crashed at the box office, signaling that Indian audiences may have finally grown tired of recycled stories.

The Numbers Tell A Shocking Story

The box office collections paint a clear picture of how badly these sequels have performed compared to their original films. Let us break down the numbers.

Son Of Sardaar: Original vs Sequel

Film Opening Weekend Lifetime Collection
Son Of Sardaar (2012) Rs 64.30 Cr Rs 103.20 Cr
Son Of Sardaar 2 (2025) Rs 24.75 Cr Rs 38.25 Cr

The starrer sequel collected barely one third of what the original made, becoming one of the biggest disasters of 2025.

Housefull 4 vs Housefull 5

Film Opening Weekend Lifetime Collection
Housefull 4 (2019) Rs 53.22 Cr Rs 205.50 Cr
Housefull 5 (2025) Rs 87.50 Cr Rs 161.50 Cr

Despite a stronger opening, Housefull 5 could not sustain and ended Rs 44 crore lower than its predecessor.

Baaghi 2 vs Baaghi 3

Film Opening Weekend Lifetime Collection
Baaghi 2 (2018) Rs 73.10 Cr Rs 164.38 Cr
Baaghi 3 (2020) Rs 53.83 Cr Rs 90.73 Cr

Tiger Shroff’s action franchise showed clear signs of fatigue with the third installment earning significantly less.

Masti vs Grand Masti

Film Opening Weekend Lifetime Collection
Masti (2004) Rs 5.47 Cr Rs 20.26 Cr
Grand Masti (2013) Rs 40.18 Cr Rs 102.00 Cr

The Masti actually improved with its sequel, making Grand Masti the first adult comedy to cross Rs 100 crore. However, Mastiii 4 in 2025 reportedly will fail to recreate that magic.

De De Pyaar De 2 also joined the list of disappointments. After collecting Rs 34.75 crore in its opening weekend, the film witnessed a massive 70 percent drop on Monday and is tracking toward a lifetime of around Rs 65 to 70 crore net which is 30% lower than its first part.

Why Did Audiences Reject These Sequels

Several factors contributed to this trend. Audiences have become smarter and are no longer willing to accept lazy storytelling just because a film carries a popular franchise name. The rise of OTT platforms has given viewers access to world class content, raising expectations significantly.

Many of these also arrived too late. Son Of Sardaar 2 came 13 years after the original. Such long gaps result in audiences losing interest in continuing stories.

Most importantly, these films offered nothing new. They simply recycled old jokes and situations without fresh content. In an era where originality is celebrated, this approach backfired spectacularly.

What This Means For Bollywood

The message is clear. The days when adding a number to a successful film title guaranteed box office gold are over. Filmmakers must now ensure their sequels offer compelling reasons for audiences to return to theaters rather than relying solely on franchise recognition.
