Goddess Kali is one of the most powerful forms of Goddess Parvathi, the divine consort of Lord Shiva. She incarnated to destroy the terrifying demon Raktabija, whose growing powers threatened the balance of the universe.
Raktabija received a special boon from Lord Brahma that made him nearly impossible to defeat. According to the boon, whenever a drop of his blood touched the ground, thousands of equally powerful demons would emerge from it. Using this extraordinary power, he began troubling sages, saints, gods, and humanity. Unable to bear his cruelty, the gods prayed to Goddess Parvathi for protection. In response, she assumed the fierce form of Goddess Kali to restore peace and righteousness.
Goddess Kali appeared with a dark complexion, glowing red eyes, flowing hair, and a garland of skulls around her neck. She carried powerful weapons and symbolized destruction of evil and protection of devotees. Her fierce appearance reflected her divine energy and determination to eliminate demonic forces.
During the battle, Goddess Kali attacked Raktabija with great intensity. To stop his blood from touching the earth and creating more demons, she drank every drop of blood flowing from his wounds with her enormous tongue. In this way, she finally destroyed the demon and saved the universe.
After the battle, Kali’s rage became uncontrollable and threatened cosmic balance. To calm her, Lord Shiva lay beneath her feet. The moment she realized she had stepped on her husband, her anger disappeared, and she returned to her peaceful form.
