Qatari teams wrapped up their Asian Beach Games – Sanya 2026 campaign with a strong showing, securing two gold medals in 3×3 basketball and beach volleyball, alongside a silver in beach handball.
Beach volleyball dominance secures gold
Beach volleyball stars Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan delivered Qatar’s first gold with a commanding 2-0 (21-15, 21-12) win over Iran in the final.
The duo dominated throughout the tournament, finishing unbeaten in Group B before progressing past the Maldives, Uzbekistan and China, and then defeating Thailand in the semi-finals.
Thailand claimed bronze after beating Oman 2-0.
The victory adds to Qatar’s strong track record in the discipline.
3×3 basketball team continues winning streak
Qatar’s men’s 3×3 basketball team also struck gold, defeating Thailand 21-10 in the final.
President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, crowned the winners, as Qatar secured gold, Thailand took silver and China claimed bronze.
He said the competition reflects the growing standard of performance in beach team sports, praising the high level and strong displays delivered by participating teams.
Their run to the title included a hard-fought 18-16 semi-final win over China, following a perfect group stage against Bahrain, Kazakhstan and India, before overcoming Iran in the quarter-finals.
Thailand reached the final after edging the Philippines 20-18, while China secured bronze with a 21-13 win over the Philippines.
Qatar maintained consistency throughout, managing a demanding schedule with multiple high-intensity matches in a single day.
Beach handball adds silver medal
In beach handball, Qatar secured silver after a 2-1 defeat to Iran in the final. The team impressed throughout the tournament, recording wins over Pakistan, Oman, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Jordan and Thailand to top their group.
They went on to defeat Bahrain in the semi-finals before falling short in the final. Thailand claimed bronze after beating Bahrain 2-0.
The result reinforces Qatar’s long-standing strength in beach handball, with a decorated record that includes Asian Beach Games titles in 2012, 2014 and 2016, as well as medals at world level, underlining their sustained presence among the sport’s leading nations.
