The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s creator, Jenny Han, has hinted that season 3 will have some surprises in store for long-time book fans. Based on the Summer trilogy by Han, published between 2010 and 2012, Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung) as she grows up during summers spent with long-time family friends, the Fisher brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s first two seasons saw Belly confront her childhood feelings for the mysterious and moody Conrad and her new, exciting feelings for the energetic and open-hearted Jeremiah. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 will reunite viewers with Belly as she’s finishing her junior year in college, happily settled with Jeremiah. Will Conrad’s reappearance in her life turn everything upside down?
In an interview with People, Han explained that, while she wanted to make sure that some of the most beloved book scenes from the third novel, We’ll Always Have Summer, were included in The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s final, super-sized season, readers of the series won’t always know what happens next:
“For me, as the creator of the world and the characters, I have to have empathy for all of them and see their side, walk in their shoes, and feel protective of them, so I do, for all of the characters. I think that there are a couple of moments that people really love from the books that I knew people were wanting to see … but it might not always happen the way that you were expecting. I wanted to make sure that I was going to really service those fans who have been following the story for a really long time.”
How Far Will Season 3 Deviate From The Book?
While The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 honored the spirit of the original novel, the series featured several changes, some of which will have a lasting impact on season 3. Conrad’s story, for instance, is more visceral in the show, as he suffered from panic attacks in season 2 and officially left for California, creating a physical and emotional distance between him and Belly.
Belly is much more hung up on Conrad in the second book than she is by the end of the second season. In the show, Belly initiated her first kiss with Jeremiah, while in the book, Jeremiah kissed Belly to make Conrad jealous. Now, however, Belly’s planning on getting married to Jeremiah in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, so whatever happens after Conrad’s arrival, it’ll undoubtedly lead to an emotional confrontation.
This isn’t the first time Han has teased book changes in TSITP season 3. Earlier this year, Han told Entertainment Weekly, “There are things that [fans] know, and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”
Our Take On The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3’s Potential Changes
TV Provides Different Storytelling Opportunities
As with any book-to-TV adaptation, Jenny Han has crafted new subplots for The Summer I Turned Pretty TV series, ones that complement the original story while propelling these new versions of the characters forward.
A lot can happen in three seasons, though. While Belly officially chooses one of the Fisher brothers in the final Summer novel, if one of the biggest book twists doesn’t occur as we’d expect it to, it’s technically still possible she’ll pick the other one in the show. Either way, some fans will be heartbroken.
