Simple strategies from project planning that helped me become a better communicator

Nicole Rothenay

Last week, I published on Medium for the first time in nearly four years.

Everything I learned the first time came rushing back — subtitles, formatting tricks, Unsplash photo credits. I even remembered I’d been accepted as a writer to a few publications, so I submitted my newest piece to the most premium one on my list: The Startup.

I felt rusty. Was the piece any good? Would they still accept me? Was publishing here still even worth it in the ChatGPT era?

And then — less than 24 hours later — I got the email: accepted.

It felt like winning the lottery… until my very first comment:

Cue the crushing self-doubt.

But after a short spiral, I realized maybe wasn’t trolling. Maybe he genuinely wanted something practical.

So, in the spirit of improvement and kindness to future readers like David — here are three practical data storytelling strategies I actually use every single week. I hope you’ll steal at least one of them.
