The upcoming iPhone Fold will be Apple’s first foldable smartphone, and we all expect it to be huge. A TrendForce report says Cupertino’s first foldable will help it reach a 19.3% market share for foldables in 2026. This will make it occupy third place, with Huawei and Samsung ahead of it.

Apple is joining the foldable market rather late, but TrendForce analysts believe pent-up demand from Apple users who want to try a foldable phone, combined with the brand’s popularity and ecosystem loyalty, will position Apple as one of the market leaders in the segment.

With the iPhone Fold, Apple aims to minimise the folding display crease by focusing on material science. The company is also using 3D printing and liquid metal in the iPhone Fold’s hinge, as well as dual layers of ultra-thin glass (UTG) and optically clear adhesive (OCA).
Other brands already use this compound for their foldable phone displays. What Apple is doing differently is optimising its behaviour in terms of absorbing stress and altering its stiffness while also reducing stress buildup in a single area.
OCA is usually located between the different screen layers, and Apple’s version will help tackle three main issues with folding displays. It can absorb stress evenly, without letting it concentrate in one visible area. The display layers will also be kept perfectly aligned and attached. This minimises visible display creases.
