Android 17 will remove Google’s search bar on your Pixel (US)

Google search techniques

Google’s At a Glance widget has always been something every Pixel user has had on their screen. It was non-negotiable. The same can be said of the Google search bar. Following the customisations to “At a Glance,” Google is working on Android 17 to allow users to remove the bottom search bar from their Pixel phone’s home screen.

Android 17 will remove Google's search bar on your Pixel.

The Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 build includes strings like “Show search bar” and “Search bar settings.” These point to Google creating a simple toggle that will let you hide the search bar entirely. Tipster Mystic Leaks also shared a video on how to remove the bottom search bar and the new options to customise it.

This change makes all the difference to those already using other search engines. Google’s search bar was merely taking up space on their screen. Now both the feature and At a Glance can be hidden.

The change only exists in the beta version and is still in testing. We expect Google to include it in the final release of Android 17 especially since it’s something its users have always wanted. The new home screen experience should probably arrive as part of the September Pixel Feature Drop. It’s a bit far, but it’s better late than never.
