Embracer splits into two companies, with Fellowship Entertainment now handling franchises such as Metro, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Tomb Raider, and The Lord of the Rings.
The latest round of shuffling the pack from Embracer looks to utilise its big gaming IPs more efficiently after wave upon wave of layoffs and closures following heavy bouts of studio acquisition.
Fellowship Entertainment will be treated as a standalone business with the main objective being ’’ to increase management focus to capture the full joint potential of the IPs, their respective communities, and some of the best game developers in the world.’’ according to Embracer Founder and Chair Lars Wingefors.
Among the studios joining the new company are 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Dark Horse Media, Eidos-Montréal, Flying Wild Hog Studios, Gunfire Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, and Warhorse Studios.
Embracer Says It’s Time to Split
With those last two, we now know the lucrative Middle-earth license will next be put into the hands of Warhorse Studios, creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Interestingly, this shift will see the formation of a new IP and licensing business unit that will explore external partnerships for game series such as Saints Row,** Legacy of Kain, **Deus Ex, Red Faction, Thief, Timesplitters, and more. A crumb of comfort for anyone (me) bemoaning the lack of new Deus Ex and Timesplitters.
Embracer will keep hold of some games and studios with game series such as Gothic, Destroy All Humans! Killing Floor, Wreckfest, and studios such as Aspyr, Limited Run Games, Milestone, Plaion, and THQ Nordic all remain within that company.
Hopefully, it prevents a whole lot of gaming series and developers from suffering under the conditions of Embracer’s acquisition splurge. Eventually, something has to work, right?
