As sandbox action-adventure sensation Terraria celebrates its 15th anniversary this month, publisher and developer Re-Logic has confirmed that the popular title has not just sold 70 million copies, but will continue receiving updates going forward.
Originally released on May 16, 2011, Terraria rarely dipped below 10,000 concurrent players on Steam, as per SteamDB, making it one of the mainstay indies of the past decade.
Terraria Celebrates 15th Anniversary With 70 Million Copies Sold and Special Collector’s Edition
“It is really hard to put into words what your support for these many years has meant to our little studio. Simply put, you all are the engine that makes this all work,” the developer wrote on Steam.
“Your support allows us to keep going, keep expanding upon Terraria, without having to fall back to price increases or microtransactions. This is becoming increasingly rare in modern gaming, and we cannot thank you enough for making what we do every day possible.”
The post linked above also includes several interesting stats. Of the 10 million copies Terraria has sold to date, PC has the lion’s share – 39.6 million.
Mobile platforms come in second, with 19.7 million copies sold, while Terraria’s console versions place third – 10.7 million.
The number of average daily players on PC sits at 461,000, with a recorded peak of 1.4 million, according to the developer.
On average, PC players have spent a bit over 101 hours building bases, exploring, and blasting apart pixelated opponents.
Supporting a game for 15 years is an impressive feat, and Re-Logic doesn’t plan on throwing in the towel just yet.
“[…] for now we are comfortable confirming that crossplay is on deck soon… and that Terraria updates will continue beyond 1.4.6/crossplay,” the developer notes. “How that will work and what those entail will be shared as we go along.”
Furthermore, the team also has “other plans and ideas that [it] will share when the time is right.”
In addition, Terraria’s 15th-anniversary celebrations also include a special physical collector’s edition that was teased in the post linked above. Its official reveal is expected to happen in early June, when pre-orders should also begin.
