Apple will adopt a new split-launch strategy for the iPhone 18 series. The Pro models will debut later this year, while the standard iPhone 18 will wait till early 2027, as well as the iPhone 18e. The iPhone 18 rumours so far haven’t been exactly what we want to hear, but a new leak is rather encouraging. It claims the iPhone 18 will get a Pro-grade upgrade in the form of 12GB RAM.

iPhone 18 will be similar to the Pro models with the 12GB RAM upgrade
Analyst Dan Nystedt, who previously reported on Apple’s A20 chip and its 2nm process, has added a new detail about the A20, saying it will have 12GB of RAM. There was a similar report before regarding the 12GB RAM for the iPhone 18, but Nystedt’s report adds to the credibility.
This new upgrade means a 50% RAM increase over the iPhone 17, which offers 8GB of RAM. Apple did something similar for its Pro models last year, upgrading from 8GB RAM in iPhone 16 Pro to 12GB in iPhone 17 Pro. It’s now the base model’s turn.
The need for bigger RAM
With AI tasks on the increase, this upgrade for the base model isn’t very surprising. It comes in handy so Apple users won’t miss out on any features in the future. Other than RAM, the other iPhone 18 specs seem to be downgrading, including chip specifications.
This will make the standard iPhone 18 more like the iPhone 18e than the iPhone 18 Pro. It’s all part of Apple’s strategy to cut costs, especially because of the price hikes in the memory market and RAM costs skyrocketing. Rather than raising the prices of their devices, Apple is choosing lower specs to maintain pricing. For a full flagship experience, there’s always the iPhone 18 Pro to get.
