India’s capital city, New Delhi, hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 then again in 1982.

The Olympic Council of Asia’s (OCA) Executive Board welcomed the official submission of the bid to host the 2038 Asian Games in Ahmedabad by the Indian Olympic Association.

This came following the board’s meeting in Sanya, China, on Wednesday, in the presence of OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, where discussions also dealt with a number of issues related to the future of sports in Asia.

During the meeting, Sheikh Joaan, along with the board’s members, praised “India’s ambitious vision to host the continent’s premier sporting event”.

An outcome of the meeting was the decision to form an inspection and evaluation committee composed of leading international and Asian experts, in accordance with the OCA’s procedures for hosting Asian Games editions.

The committee will then visit Ahmedabad to conduct on-site inspections of sports venues and facilities. The team will also review the allocated budget, operational and logistical plans, and the readiness of infrastructure to host the major sporting event.

This will be followed by the creation of a detailed technical report to be submitted to the board for review at its next meeting, scheduled to be held in Nagoya, Japan, in September, coinciding with the hosting of the 20th Asian Games “Aichi-Nagoya 2026”.

India’s capital city, New Delhi, hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951, and again in 1982. It also hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, major sporting events host Qatar is set to host the 21st Asian Games in its capital, Doha, in 2030, whereas the 22nd edition will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2034.
