
High-pressure system is expected to form on May 25 and intensify from May 26, leading to significantly higher temperatures nationwide
ISLAMABAD:(UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 21st, 2026) The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast moderate to severe heatwave conditions across most parts of the country during the Eid ul Adha holidays, warning of a sharp rise in temperatures from May 25 to May 31 due to a developing high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.
According to the Met Office, the high-pressure system is expected to form on May 25 and intensify from May 26, leading to significantly higher temperatures nationwide.
The PMD stated that daytime temperatures are likely to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal, with mercury expected to reach between 42°C and 45°C in several cities, including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Multan, Bahawalpur, and surrounding regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
In northern areas such as Malakand, Hazara Division, Gilgit-Baltistan, and parts of Kashmir, temperatures are expected to stay 5°C to 7°C above normal, ranging between 38°C and 40°C.
The Met Office further warned that extreme heat, ranging from 47°C to 50°C, may affect parts of interior Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Sibi, and adjoining areas.
Karachi is also expected to experience hot and dry conditions, with temperatures likely to remain between 35°C and 38°C during the forecast period.
Night temperatures are also expected to stay above normal across the country.
The PMD has advised citizens, especially children, women, and senior citizens, to take precautionary measures during the heatwave.
People have been urged to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours from 10am to 4pm and ensure adequate hydration.
Farmers have been advised to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions and take care of livestock to prevent heat stress.
The department also cautioned that electricity demand is likely to surge due to increased use of cooling systems and appealed for responsible use of water and power resources.
Authorities have been instructed to remain alert and take preventive measures to avoid any heat-related emergencies during the forecast period.
